What Can I Do To Continue The Learning At Home?

There are many ways to continue the learning at home!

* Read to your child every night for 10-15 minutes. Encourage them to retell the story in their own words when you finish. While reading, ask questions about the story (i.e. Who are the characters? Where is the story set? What is the problem? How do the characters solve the problem?) Prompt your child to make connections between: 1. The text and their own experiences. 2. The text and the world. 3. The text and other texts.

* Listen to your child read as often as possible.

* Practice the weekly words with your child. These are high frequency words that appear in many books/texts that your child will read this year at school.  A great way to reinforce the words/extend the learning is to practice thinking of/writing sentences that use the weekly words.

* Practice printing and writing in a variety of forms (lists, letters, recipes, stories, poems).

* Look for ways to practice math with your child at home: For example, have them help sort the laundry, look for patterns around the house, allow them to help with measuring out ingredients while you are baking/cooking, practice simple addition/subtraction problems.

* Look online for educational games/website. A favourite of mine is http://www.tumblebooks.com/library/asp/home_tumblebooks.asp. Here your child can listen and follow along as books are read to them!
